Meet the Poet: Dr. Ghazala Alam Dec 2024

Founded in 1839, Boston University (BU) is one of the largest private research universities in the United States, currently home to over 37,000 students.Ghazala was invited to discuss her work and poetry with students and faculty at the Department of World Languages and Literature, Boston University.This department is the largest hub for language and cultural studies, covering 10 living languages and several ancient ones.

We invite students, faculty, and poetry lovers to an afternoon of cultural bridge-building as we welcome Dr. Ghazala Alam to the Department of World Languages and Literatures. Dr. Alam, a practicing physician and Pakistani immigrant, will share the rich tapestry of her life through her bilingual Urdu and English poetry. This session offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of medicine, migration, and the arts, all through the thoughtful lens of her collection, “On Being Human.”

Ghazala Alam

Ghazala Alam writes English and Urdu poetry, reflecting her experiences as a woman of color, an immigrant, and a practicing physician. She has recently published a book of her poems (On Being Human, Gatekeeper Press, 2024, ISBN No. 9781662937903). Each chapter in the book has a preamble in English, the English and Urdu versions of the poem, as well as an English transliteration of the Urdu poem.
